The SUUNTO Philosophy: A Unique Journey Since 1936

Every adventurer has their own story - and that applies to us as well. Whether on the highest peaks of Mount Everest or in the depths of the Antarctic icebergs, Suunto watches are the reliable companions of explorers and divers, even in remote areas. Because Suunto has a clear goal: We want to inspire adventurers, explorers, and sports enthusiasts and equip them with the right gear to conquer the mountains, oceans, and paths of this world, both mentally and physically.

At Suunto, we not only encourage pushing the limits - it is rather our firm conviction. This conviction drives us to continuously consider quality and craftsmanship as our highest standard. For over 75 years, we have been leaders in the field of design and innovation of sports watches, instruments, and dive computers at our production facility in Finland.

Today, the Suunto trademark stands for original design as well as functionality and absolute reliability under the most extreme conditions. The Finnish company manufactures GPS watches that can even navigate at altitudes of 8,000 meters; sports watches for measuring heart rate and cadence, offering additional features such as navigation, and our dive computers can calculate the time a diver can safely spend at greater depths thanks to the most advanced algorithm.

Suunto's history began almost 80 years ago when Finnish orienteer and engineer Tuomas Vohlonen tackled a problem - the inaccurate measurement of compasses at that time. His solution? Invent a better compass. In 1936, he developed a new technique for mass-producing liquid-filled compasses. This was just one of the many innovations that Suunto has produced since then.

In 1965, Suunto introduced the first dive compass and revolutionized the sport in 1987 with the introduction of its first dive computer. Previously, athletes had to calculate their times laboriously using complex tables, but now they could rely on the Suunto SME-ML, making this sport safer and gaining more popularity.

A decade later, Suunto's production lines saw another revolution with the Vector model. This watch was one of the first of its kind with "ABC" functionalities, namely Altimeter, Barometer, and Compass. It is known for its reliability among mountaineers and is still produced today. This model has probably climbed more peaks than any other watch!

Mikko Moilanen, the president of Suunto, emphasizes the importance of our Finnish heritage. Our enthusiasm for innovation has a long tradition, and we are passionately committed to doing things the right way.

The company, headquartered in Vantaa, Helsinki, employs over 400 people worldwide. The entire team works in the same building - from designers and engineers to skilled workers who assemble watches by hand. This offers many advantages, especially for products like the Suunto Ambit, which are produced internally and guarantee the highest level of care in assembly.

Moilanen adds, "Behind every product is a simple goal. Every Suunto watch is the result of the collaboration of passionate people. The pursuit of excellence is simply in our blood."

Working right on the doorstep of Finnish nature offers another advantage - it is the perfect place for rigorous testing during the research and development process of our products. For example, our specialized dive team conducts tests at depths of up to 200 meters in a flooded tunnel nearby.
